Nature & Wildlife

Explore the island in style and comfort on a 'Bird of Prey and Forest Adventure' with Mogabout.

Seal watching hot spots include Kildonan shore, Merkland point (by the castle) and Lochranza. (Please don't get too close and disturb them as they may be digesting their fishy dinners).

Red deer can be seen in the north end of the island, particularly in Lochranza and on the hillsides and footpaths, including Glen Sannox and Glen Rosa.

To make the most of your time, why not book a local guide with Arran Wild Walks or Otters Tail.

Brodick Castle Country Park has a nature room with hands-on activities for children.  There is also an extensive wooden treetop adventure playground to provide a fun play area for children.

The Arran Ranger Service offers a varied programme of events and guided walks for families throughout the main season.

Roots of Arran have developed an area of woodland between Lamlash and Brodick into a network of paths leading to quiet places where you can enjoy the woodland environment.  They have planted trees, including Beech, Hazel, Willow, Oak, Alder, Blackthorn and even an orchard to promote biodiversity. With the help of a local artist, volunteers and pupils from Arran primary schools, a beautiful living spiral has been constructed and you can rest on seating hand built with green wood. It is open to both residents and visitors.  Access to the woodland is via the viewpoint car park at the top of the Brodick hill. Walk down the path towards Brodick until you see a twiggy signpost pointing the way. Alternatively, walk up from Brodick via the post office and the Glenartney Hotel towards Lamlash.

Arran Birding is a useful place for finding out the many different species of birds around the island.  And you can report any special sightings via the website.

Visitor Centres

The Old Byre Showroom is a VisitScotland 4* Visitor Attraction on the west coast of the island. It offers a fabulous range of lifestyle brands for all the family, as well as leather goods, sheepskin slippers and boots and beautiful contemporary wool blankets. For refreshments, there is an authentic Scottish-Turkish cafe/restaurant serving drinks and food including Turkish pizzas cooked in a wood-fired oven. The kids can let off steam in the outdoor play area complete with giant sand pit. There really is something for everyone here!

The Arran Heritage Museum takes a fascinating look at how life used to be on days gone by together with open days showcasing traditional crafts and entertainment. The Rosaburn café offers delicious seasonal meals and home baking with picnic tables in the gardens.

The Isle of Arran Distillery in Lochranza is where the whisky is made and the highland setting will take your breath away.  There are guided tours of the distillery throughout the day or you can just soak up the atmosphere of the visitor centre and take home a wee dram sample selection or a bottle of classic Arran Single Malt. The Arran Gold liqueur is made with whisky and cream and is also available in a tub of ice cream.  The Distillery also offers private tours that should be booked in advance.  Follow this link to our 'Something Special' page for more info.

Bellvue Farm offers family-friendly guided farm tours bookable in advance. Highland cows, Alpacas, a miniature pony, ducks, hens and rabbits all live at the farm.  Located on the west side of Arran in Blackwaterfoot.
